Cuatro@Cabrillo: Arts Adventures

The San Pedro Waterfront Arts District invites the community to join us at the next chapter of a new arts education series at the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium called Cuatro@Cabrillo: Arts Adventures for the Culturally Curious. Join arts scholar Gregorio Luke as he leads us through three films by Oscar winning Mexican directors in seminars designed to promote a deeper appreciation of the arts of Mexico.

The first movie in the 2019 film seminar series is GRAVITY by Alfonso Cuarón on Sunday, January 27th, 2019, 3:30pm. Cuarón confronts the extraordinary challenge of recreating a world without gravity, starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney.  Cuatro@Cabrillo film seminar ticket donations are $15 for general admission and $35 for VIP tickets. VIP tickets include an exclusive reception with Gregorio Luke, limited VIP reserved seating and free parking. Tickets HERE.

On Thursday, January 17th, 2019 6:00pm – 9:00 pm Mexican film fans can also participate in a very special Potluck Film Salon at the home of Gregorio and Lyndee Luke. Gregorio will screen a relevant Alfonso Cuarón film and lead a discussion about Cuaron’s work. They can be purchased with the Cuatro@Cabrillo films HERE.

The 2019l film seminar schedule is:

  • GRAVITY by Alfonso Cuarón, Sunday, January 27th, 2019, 3:30pm. A movie in which Cuarón confronts the extraordinary challenge of recreating a world without gravity.
  • BIRDMAN by Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu, Sunday, March 24th, 2019, 3:30pm. Perhaps the best film expression of magical realism, a literary movement that defined Latin American Literature.
  • SHAPE OF WATER by Guillermo del Toro, Sunday, May 19th, 2019, 3:30pm. Del Toro demonstrates a deep knowledge of the Monster genre but also the courage to transform it.

This four-part series started on Sunday, September 16, celebrating Mexico’s Independence Day, and featured a lecture about the art of Mexico delivered by renowned arts scholar Gregorio Luke. Cuatro@Cabrillo is Gregorio Luke’s most ambitious work to date. Luke presented a kaleidoscopic vision of MEXICO; bringing to life the ancient art of the Aztecs and Mayas, the golden beauty of colonial cathedrals, to the vibrant MURALS created after the 1910 revolution and contrasted with the cutting-edge art of contemporary Mexican culture. In this journey, we  explored the lives of DIEGO RIVERA and FRIDA KAHLO, OROZCO, SIQUEIROS, TAMAYO and many more!
