Zhena’s Folk Chorus at Alva’s Showroom
Come let Zhena Folk Chorus transport you to the villages of Central and Eastern Europe and beyond. The women of Zhena (“woman” or “’wife” in Slavic languages) are dedicated to preserving and presenting the folk songs of Bosnia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Georgia, Hungary, Macedonia, Romania, Russia, Turkey and Ukraine.
Based in San Pedro, Zhena Folk Chorus appears throughout greater Los Angeles. The chorus was part of Avaz International Dance Theatre from 1989, becoming independent in 1993 and non-profit in 1994. Appearances have included the Getty Center, “World City” at Walt Disney Hall’s Keck Amphitheater, Mingei International Museum in San Diego, Los Angeles World Festival of Sacred Music, UCLA, UC Irvine, Cal State University Long Beach and Northridge, and Los Angeles County’s televised Holiday Celebration at Los Angeles Music Center. Zhena has performed at numerous festivals, ethnic and international events, conferences, museums, cultural centers, colleges, schools, and churches.

In Yiddish “Shpil” means to play an engrossing game, tell a captivating story, sing a beautiful song, give a rousing speech and make an irresistible sales pitch.
The Shpil’s members bring a unique blend of folk, rock, jazz and classical influences to the table. Collecting songs from far and wide. The Shpil’s repertoire ranges from authentic klezmer standards to downright obscure folk melodies to daring originals.
